Posterior Labral Repair

What Are the Surgical Treatments for Shoulder Instability?

Arthroscopic surgery is the most common procedure used to repair posterior labral tears.

  • Arthroscopic labral repair:  the torn labrum is reattached to the glenoid.

  • Debridement: In cases where the tear is not amenable to repair, damaged or frayed tissue may be trimmed/removed to reduce symptoms.

Surgical Procedure:

Posterior labral repair is typically performed arthroscopically, utilizing minimally invasive techniques that offer several advantages, including smaller incisions, reduced post-operative pain, and faster recovery. During the procedure, the surgeon makes small incisions around the shoulder and inserts a tiny camera called an arthroscope to visualize the structures inside the joint.

Using specialized instruments, the surgeon then carefully identifies the torn labrum and prepares the glenoid socket for repair. Sutures or anchors are then used to reattach the labrum to the glenoid, restoring its anatomical position and stability. In some cases, additional procedures may be performed to address associated injuries or anatomical abnormalities, such as SLAP repair or biceps tendon surgery.
